A Kernel in the Pod “The Adventures of a ‘Midlevel’ Clinician in a Top-level World”

A Kernel in the Pod is a well written book that chronicles the life of the author himself, J. Michael Jones. The book tells of his journey to become a PA as well as his journey as a PA.

He also shares stories about his personal life, including his children and wife, time working overseas as a missionary, and struggling with depression. Additionally, he has a great sense of humor and an amazing story telling ability that keeps you laughing throughout the entire book. A Kernel in the Pod gives a genuine and honest perspective into his life and does not fail to keep you interested. His life is does not mirror a typical PA life, but rather an out of the ordinary one. Not many people have a life quite as interesting as Mr. Jones and I genuinely couldn’t wait to get to the end to see what would happen.

My only perceived downside to the book is that Mr. Jones was treated awful as a PA for a good majority of his career. His bad treatment could turn some off from entering the profession, so it is important to know that his experiences are not common. He encountered a lot of opposition, mostly from MDs that questioned his ability as a PA to practice medicine. In my personal workplace PAs are highly respected and treated very well.

Nevertheless, I highly recommend this book to anyone thinking about becoming a PA, will become a PA, is a PA or is looking for a good story to read. The book will not necessarily help you in your journey into the profession and is more of an enjoyable read where you can put your feet up with a cup of (insert your favorite beverage). Hopefully you will not be disappointed.
